This article about the HANS head and neck restraint device for race-car drivers mentions that Wayne State professor Paul Begeman conducted development tests on it using dummies at the university's crash-test laboratory. The deaths of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt and Formula One driver Ayrton Senna in racing accidents led the governing bodies of several circuits to more seriously consider making the device mandatory for drivers.
